Pharmacological properties

Ursogem belongs to the group of combination hepatoprotectors containing ursodeoxycholic acid and hymecromone.

Ursodeoxycholic acid, a natural hydrophilic bile acid with a broad spectrum of pharmacological action, provides:

  • hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects (increases resistance of hepatocyte membranes to damaging factors, reduces free radical formation, oxidative stress in the liver, and exhibits antioxidant effects)
  • antiapoptotic action (inhibiting hepatocyte apoptosis by preventing cytochrome C release and other factors triggering cell death)
  • choleretic and cholelitholytic effects (stimulates bile formation and secretion, its flow, reduces cholesterol saturation in bile, dissolves cholesterol gallstones in the gallbladder, and improves bile rheology, making it less viscous)
  • immunomodulatory activity (reduces autoimmune liver damage, suppresses production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, regulates activity of T-cells and macrophages, reducing the intensity of autoimmune reactions)
  • antifibrotic effects (slows liver fibrosis)
  • hypocholesterolemic action (decreases cholesterol synthesis, promotes its biliary excretion).

Ursodeoxycholic acid is secreted into bile, reabsorbed in the intestine, and returns to the liver again. This enterohepatic circulation enhances its therapeutic efficacy.

Hymecromone, a synthetic coumarin derivative used for treating functional disorders of the biliary system, offers combined action with:

  • antispasmodic effects (selectively reduces sphincter of Oddi tone, facilitates bile/and pancreatic secretion flow into the duodenum, eliminates spasms caused by hyperkinetic dyskinesia, without affecting intestinal peristalsis)
  • choleretic action (increases bile volume by enhancing its production by hepatocytes, reduces biliary cholesterol concentration, prevents stone formation)
  • cholekinetic effects (improves gallbladder/and duct motility for timely bile elimination).

Additionally, it reduces biliary inflammation, neutralizes free radicals damaging the epithelium of the biliary tract, normalizes intestinal bile flow necessary for emulsification and absorption of lipids, and alleviates dyspepsia symptoms.

Indications

Ursogem is used in cats and dogs for the prevention and treatment of complex liver and biliary tract diseases, including:

  • inflammatory and degenerative liver diseases (hepatitis of various etiologies, fatty liver dystrophy, primary biliary cirrhosis without decompensation)
  • biliary tract diseases (non-obstructive cholelithiasis, cholangitis, intrahepatic cholestasis, non-calculous chronic cholecystitis, biliary tract dyskinesia)
  • conditions following surgical interventions on the gallbladder and bile ducts
  • symptoms associated with impaired liver and biliary tract function (decreased appetite, nausea, constipation, vomiting due to bile hyposecretion)
  • hepatorenal syndrome and cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis) as part of complex therapy
  • prevention and reduction of the negative effects of hepatotoxic substances.

Dosage and method of administration

Ursogem is used in cats and dogs perorally individually or with feed.

Ursogem for dogs is prescribed at a daily dose of 10-15 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid and 10-20 mg of hymecromone. The daily dose may be divided into two equal administrations at 8-12-hour intervals.

The recommended minimum course of treatment with Ursogem for dogs is 1 month; in chronic liver diseases – 4 months.

The recommended doses of the product, adjusted according to the animal’s body weight and dosing regimen (single administration once daily or divided into 2 administrations), are presented in the table:

For more precise dose adjustment according to the animal’s body weight, the tablet can be divided along the score lines.

The most convenient dosing options are:

    • Dogs up to 5 kg: Ursogem for dogs 75 mg + 100 mg
    • Dogs from 5 to 10 kg: Ursogem for dogs 150 mg + 200 mg
    • Dogs from 10 kg: Ursogem for dogs 300 mg + 400 mg

Ursogem for cats is prescribed at a daily dose of 10-15 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid and 5-10 mg of hymecromone. The daily dose may be divided into two equal administrations at 8-12-hour intervals.

The recommended minimum course of treatment with Ursogem for cats is 1 month; in chronic liver diseases – 3 months.

Cats weighing over 10 kg: 1 tablet per every 4 kg of body weight (¼ tablet per every 1 kg).

For more precise dose adjustment according to the animal’s body weight, the tablet can be divided along the score lines.

To make an administration easier, it is possible to pre-dissolve the tablet (or a part of a tablet) in a small amount of water and administer it using a syringe dispenser or a standard syringe for injection without a needle perorally.

The dose of the product, frequency of administration, and duration of the treatment course are determined by the veterinarian individually, depending on the indications, severity of the disease, body weight, and condition of the animal.
