Pharmacological properties

Sulfadimidine and trimethoprim enhance each other's activity through successive cellicolous impact on the metabolism of n-aminobenzoic and folic acids, thus ensuring a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against grampositive and gram-negative microbes including: 

  • E.coli 

  • Bordetella spp. 

  • Brucella spp.

  • Salmonella spp. 

  • Proteus spp. 

  • Haemophilus spp. 

  • Pasteurella spp. 

  • Vibrio spp. 

  • Staphylococcus spp.

Indications
Ditrim powder is prescribed to calves, lambs, piglets, foals, and dogs to treat bacterial
infections of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems
caused by sulfadimidine- and trimethoprim-sensitive pathogens.

Treatment course

Mixed with feed or suspended in a small amount of water, milk, or its substitute and then given to animals individually

In the first day of treatment – 5 g/10 kg of animal body weight once a day; then – 2.5 g/10 kg of animal body weight

3-5 days

In severe cases, the treatment can be extended up to 7 days

No side effects or complications are generally observed during the use of Ditrim powder. In case of hypersensitiveness to active components of the drug and side effects (i. e. refusal from feed, vomiting), the treatment shall be discontinued.

Restrictions
Contraindications and special instructions:

Avoid using the drug in pregnant and lactating animals.
Due to antagonistic interaction, avoid using Ditrim powder simultaneously with the
drugs containing folic acid, novocaine, anestezin, and other derivatives of paraaminobenzoic acid.
