Lexoflon OR – reliable solution to the problem of bacterial infections

L. M. Kashkovskaya, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences (PhD-equivalent), Senior Researcher at NITA-FARM

Introduction

Healthy poultry is the key to high productivity and production profitability.

Achieving this in poultry farm conditions is not easy. High bird density, technological stress, errors in housing and feeding – all of this reduces immunity and contributes to the spread of pathogenic microorganisms among the flock.

Infectious (bacterial) diseases are a scourge of modern poultry farming. The economic losses from these diseases result from reduced poultry productivity, chick mortality, costs of control measures, including emergency culling.

The most dangerous are diseases caused by highly pathogenic microorganisms (salmonellosis, pasteurellosis, streptococcosis, mycoplasmosis, colibacillosis). Young poultry is especially susceptible in this case, with mortality sometimes reaching 100%.

Today, more than 90% of poultry farms use antibacterial products from the fluoroquinolone group to combat bacterial infections. However, their prolonged use has led to the development of pathogen resistance to these antibiotics.

In this regard, there is a need to create new products that are active against antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.

Such is the product Lexoflon OR, developed by NITA-FARM (Russia).

Lexoflon OR is a new antibacterial product based on levofloxacin in the form of an oral solution. Levofloxacin is a new-generation antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone group. It helps overcome microorganism resistance to previous-generation products, including enrofloxacin, is effective against mixed infections, and ensures rapid recovery of productive performance. This is confirmed by studies conducted by the All-Russian Scientific Research Veterinary Institute of Poultry Farming and the Siberian Scientific Research Institute of Poultry Farming.

Thus, during clinical trials with broiler chicks infected with highly pathogenic strains of pathogens, it was established that Lexoflon OR has higher therapeutic efficacy compared to a product based on enrofloxacin (Fig. 1).

Figure 1. Efficacy of treatment of chicks infected with enteropathogenic bacteria with Lexoflon OR and a product based on enrofloxacin

* strains resistant to enrofloxacin

** pathogen carriage was detected by laboratory methods in some individuals after treatment

The figure shows that administration of Lexoflon OR in drinking water helped reduce the recovery time of poultry in the experimental groups by 2-3 days compared to the control group. The efficacy of chick treatment with Lexoflon OR was 8.5-73.3% higher compared to treatment with a product based on enrofloxacin. In addition, laboratory methods (indirect hemagglutination reaction) confirmed complete elimination of Salmonella from the chicks' bodies in the experimental group, which excludes the possibility of its carriage. At the same time, in the control group after therapy with a product based on enrofloxacin, the salmonellosis pathogen was isolated in some samples.

The conducted experiments showed that Lexoflon OR in the treatment of bacterial infections in poultry ensures high survival rates after treatment, as well as a shortened recovery period, which contributes to the rapid restoration of productivity compared to a product based on enrofloxacin.

CONCLUSION

Thus, NITA-FARM offers the antibacterial product Lexoflon OR for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections in poultry, which has demonstrated:

  • high therapeutic efficacy in treating bacterial infections in broiler chicks
  • the ability to effectively eliminate bacterial strains resistant to previous-generation fluoroquinolones (including enrofloxacin)
  • reduced recovery times and, as a result, increased live weight gain.
