Babesiosis in Dogs

V.A. Sidorkin A.A. Vasin O.A. Klishchenko V.A. Orobec

INTRODUCTION

Babesiosis in dogs (also known as piroplasmosis) is a dangerous disease caused by infection with piroplasms (Piroplasma canis). These are single-celled parasites transmitted by ixodid ticks. To prevent a tick bite from becoming fatal for your pet, carefully inspect your dog after walks. This is especially important in spring, early summer, and autumn, when ticks are most active.

HOW INFECTION OCCURS

Ixodid ticks infected with piroplasms release pathogenic microorganisms into the dog's bloodstream during a bite. They penetrate erythrocytes and develop inside them. During their life cycle, piroplasms release toxic substances and gradually destroy blood cells. The infection affects the functioning of the entire organism.

In dogs with babesiosis, the following phenomena are observed:

  • decreased glucose levels
  • anemia and tissue hypoxia (oxygen deficiency)
  • acid-base imbalance in the blood
  • release of hemoglobin with its breakdown into bilirubin and toxins
  • jaundice – liver dysfunction due to intoxication
  • toxin-induced damage to small blood vessels
  • inflammation of internal organs
  • dysfunction of the nervous system
  • heart failure
  • pulmonary edema
  • kidney degeneration

Consequences of babesiosis in dogs may include renal failure, heart failure, chronic liver inflammation, and brain pathologies. The disease can develop rapidly – within 2–3 days – so it is best to consult a veterinarian at the first signs.

SYMPTOMS OF BABESIOSIS IN DOGS

  • dark urine (may even be black)
  • small hemorrhages on the mucous membranes of the eyes and in the mouth
  • yellowish tint of the mucous membranes
  • enlarged liver
  • weak heart rhythm
  • elevated temperature up to 41–42°C
  • weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite
  • movement disorders
  • in severe cases, paralysis of the hind limbs
  • vomiting, bloody diarrhea

TREATMENT OF BABESIOSIS IN DOGS

Treatment at home is not possible. Consultation with a veterinarian is essential in cases of babesiosis in dogs! The disease is treated with specific medications.

Our company produces products in the form of ready-to-use injectable solutions or in powder form – for solution preparation. Within 3–5 hours after injection of one of the products listed below, your pet should start feeling better.

Neozidin M. The active ingredients are diminazene and phenazone – substances that can eliminate blood parasites in animals with efficacy up to 98.5%. This applies to a broad spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms. Phenazone also reduces body temperature and helps improve the animal's condition. The product is ready to use. Therapeutic dose: 0.5 ml/10 kg body weight. This dose is divided into two intramuscular injections with an interval of 1–2 hours. After injection, the active substances begin to destroy piroplasms in the blood, help reduce pain, and support subsequent recovery. If necessary, the product can be re-administered after 24 hours.

Neozidin. NITA-FARM also produces the same product in powder form, packaged in 2.36 g vials. To prepare the solution, simply add 12.5 ml of water for injection to the vial. The dosage is also 0.5 ml/10 kg.

If your veterinarian has diagnosed your dog with babesiosis, ask about treatment options with NITA-FARM products that have demonstrated high efficacy.
