Pharmacological properties

Altrenogest is a synthetic progestogen analog. It reduces plasma concentrations of endogenous gonadotropins – luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – causing regression of follicles larger than 5 mm in diameter and suppressing the growth of follicles approximately 3 mm in size. This results in delayed estrus and ovulation throughout the treatment period. Following discontinuation of Fertoxel administration, a significant surge of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) is released from the pituitary into the bloodstream, stimulating follicular growth and maturation, and leading to synchronized estrus.

Indications

Fertoxel is administered to sexually mature replacement gilts to synchronize estrus, enabling the formation of uniform management groups and improving litter size.
In sows, Fertoxel is used after the first farrowing to prevent low prolificacy (second-litter syndrome).

Dosage and method of administration

Fertoxel is administered as follows:

To sexually mature gilts after their first estrus (from 7-9 months of age):
Administered individually, either orally mixed with feed or directly into the mouth using a dosing device, at a dose of 5 mL (20 mg altrenogest) per animal once daily for 18 consecutive days.

To sows:
Administered individually on the day of weaning, either orally with feed or directly into the mouth, at a dose of 5 mL (20 mg altrenogest) per animal once daily for 3 consecutive days.

When Fertoxel is administered with feed:
The product should be applied onto the feed surface immediately before the morning feeding. Fertoxel is dispensed using a dosing device onto half of the total feed portion allocated for the morning meal. After thorough mixing, this medicated portion is offered to the animals.

The feed must be distributed in such a way that, under group-housing conditions, each animal has adequate access to receive its full dose. The second half of the morning feed ration (without medication) is provided only after the animals have completely consumed the first, medicated portion.

Following discontinuation of treatment, synchronized estrus typically occurs within 5–7 days, depending on individual animal characteristics.
