Tiamulin, an active substance of Tialong, is a semisynthetic derivative of pleuromutilin, a diterpene antibiotic produced by Pleurotus mutulis, which has a bacteriostatic activity: it inhibits the protein synthesis by ribosomes of some Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes.

Tiamulin is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes, including Mycoplasma spp., Haemophilus spp., Treponema hyodysenteriae, Staphylococcus spp.,Streptococcus spp., Clostridium perfringens, Leptospira spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Pasteurella spp., Corynebacterium pyogenes; it has no effect on the bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family, including Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli.
