450 mg diminazene
550 mg phenazone
Neozidin has a wide range of antiprotozoan activity; it is effective against causative parasite agents of the following diseases of bovine animals, sheep, horses and dogs: babesiosis, pyroplasmosis, fransaiellesis, trypanosomiasis, theleriasis and nuttaliosis.
The mechanism of action of diminazene (the active substance of this drug) is as follows: diminazene inhibits aerobic glycolysis and DNA synthesis in blood parasites, which leads to destruction of their cellular structure and subsequent death. Phenazone is an anti-inflammatory and antipyretic agent, which also decreases vascular permeability.
Neozidin is quickly absorbed from the injection site and distributed among the organs and tissues of the animal; concentration of diminazene diaceturate in blood reaches its therapeutic level after 3-5 hours and remains at this level for 24 hours. The drug mostly accumulates in the liver and kidneys; it is eliminated with urine; in lactating animals, it can also partially be eliminated with milk.
Neozidin belongs to moderately hazardous substances; if the recommended dose is observed, the drug does not have any sensitizing, embrytoxic or teratogenic effect.
Neozidin can be used as a therapeutic and preventive measure against the following diseases of bovine cattle, sheep, horses and dogs: trypanosomiasis, babesiosis, fransaiellesis, nuttaliosis, theleriasis and mixed invasions. Neozidin shall be administered intramuscularly as 7% (calculated as diminazene base) water solution.
In order to prepare sterile 7% solution, a vial with 2.36 g of Neozidin powder is filled with 12.5 mL of water for injections or normal saline.
The prepared Neozidin solution can be stored for no more than 24 hours (in a dark place at room temperature) or 48 hours (in the refrigerator). The solution must not be boiled and its temperature must not exceed 37°C.
7% Neozidin solution shall be administered intramuscularly at the following doses: 1 mL per 20 kg of animal weight (diminazene concentration – 3.5 mg per 1kg) for treatment of pyroplasmosis, babesiosis, fransaiellesis and nuttaliosis; 1.5 mL per 20 kg of animal weight (diminazene concentration – 5 mg per 1 kg) for treatment of theleriasis; 2.2 mL per 20 kg of animal weight (diminazene concentration – 8 mg per 1 kg) for treatment of trypanosomiasis caused by T.brucei (Nagana disease).
The correlation between the drug dose and the animal weight are showed in the following table:

Maximum allowed dose of Neozidin is 4 g per animal.
If after the first drug administration, the temperature of the treated animal has not dropped and its general condition has not improved, the same dose of the drug can be administered once more after 24 hours.
Treated animals shall be provided with necessary rest and additional symptomatic treatment (with cardiac drugs, vitamins and micronutrients (such as E-Selen, etc.)).
As a preventive measure, Neozidin (with diminazene dose being 3.5 mg per 1 kg of animal weight) shall be administered once if animals with clinical symptoms of pyroplasmosis have been found in the herd or if the herd has been transferred to an area troubled with blood protozoan diseases. If necessary, the drug can be administered once more after 10 – 15.
Usually, there are no complications or adverse effects if the drug is administered in accordance with the prescribing information. In rare cases, a local reaction (bulge) may appear at the injection site, which shall disappear by itself within a few days. If an increased dose of Neozidin is administered, it may lead to poisoning with symptoms being as follows: nervous disorder, convulsions, ataxia, vomiting, agitation, and muscle tremors. In case of such adverse effects, animals shall be treated with symptomatic drugs.
Treated animals can be slaughtered for food no sooner than 21 days after last application of Neozidin. In case of compulsory slaughter occurring before the above stated period, meat of slaughtered animals can be used as carnivore feed or reprocessed into bone tankage.
Milk of milking animals can be used as food no sooner than 5 days after last application of Neozidin. This milk can be used as animal feed after heat treatment.
