Sodium monensin, which formulated into the drug, belong to polyester ionophore antibiotics. Sodium monensin has a broad spectrum of anticoccidial action, is active against all types of coccidia (Eimeria), parasitic in birds including Eimeria necatrix, Eimeria tenella, Eimeria brunetti, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria mivati, Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria рrаесох, Eimeria adenoides. Eimeria meleagrimitis, Eimeria dispersa. Eimeria gallopavonis. The mechanism of action of monensin is associated with disrupted transfer of sodium and potassium cations in immature coccidia, which leads to their death at the stage of schizogony. When Melazit is administrated orally monensin is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and exerts its action in the mucous membrane and in the submucosal layer of the intestine. It is excreted from the body mainly in unchanged form with the excrements.
