  • Pharmacological properties
  • Pharmacological properties

Monensin belongs to polyester ionophore antibiotics. Monensin has a broad-spectrum anticoccidial action; it is active against all types of coccidia (Eimeria), parasitic in birds including E. necatrix, E. tenella, E. brunetti, E. maxima, E. mivati, E. acervulina, E. рrаесох, E. adenoides, E. meleagrimitis, E. dispersa, and E. gallopavonis.

Mode of action: monensin disrupts transfer of sodium and potassium cations in immature coccidia, thus causing their death at the stage of schizogony.

When Melazit 40% is administrated orally, monensin is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and exerts its action in the mucous membrane and in the submucosal layer of the intestine. It is excreted from the body mainly in an unchanged form with excrements.

  • Indications
  • Indications

Melazit 40% is prescribed to prevent coccidiosis in broilers and replacement chickens.

  • Dosage and route of administration
  • Dosage and route of administration

In poultry, Melazit 40% is used mixed with feed at a dose of 250 g per 1 ton of feed (on API basis — 100 mg of monensin per 1 kg of feed):

    • in broiler chickens — introduced on the first day of life for the entire period of rearing and excluded from the diet only 5 days before slaughter

    • in replacement chickens — introduced on the first day of life and excluded from the diet at least 14 days before the egg-laying period starts.

To ensure uniform distribution of the drug throughout the feed mix, the calculated dose of Melazit 40% is thoroughly mixed with a little amount of combined feed and then added to a daily portion of the feed.

Added to the combined feed, the drug is stable within 3 months
